Gold Cutlery Care Advise
Good quality gold cutlery is usually made of stainless steel and then stained with a gold coating. Gold cutlery is as strong as silver cutlery - the classic stainless steel colour- but gold coating requires more delicate care.
The use of oxidizing or alkaline cleaners (such as ultra degreasing agents), harsh detergents, very rough scrubbing sponges or long contact with lemon (considered alkaline) or salt can alter the brightness of the gold colour or even damage the surface. It is therefore necessary to take care of your gold silverware each time it is used, in order to guarantee its longevity.
When should I clean my gold cutlery?
Before using your cutlery for the first time, the best to do is to wash it thoroughly by hand. Always wash in warm water with a mild soap or detergent. Rinse with clean, hot water and dry quickly. It's that simple!
Ideally, you should wash your cutlery after every meal, and avoid soaking or not washing it overnight.
Can I wash gold cutlery in the dishwasher?
There are two schools of thought on this subject. Those who believe that the dishwasher is safe and those who, like us, are more cautious. Over time, the use of the dishwasher can cause premature wear. There are an infinite number of dishwasher models and not all of them wash the same way. The ideal way to wash shiny gold silverware in a dishwasher is to use a fast wash cycle, which is usually combined with a lower water temperature. This will gently wash your flatware and increase the life of thegold coating.
If you're not sure how your dishwasher cleans (cycle, temperature), we recommend washing gold cutlery by hand.
How do I wash gold cutlery by hand?
To wash gold-plated cutlery, gentleness is the name of the game! You'll need a soft sponge (the scratchy side is obviously to be avoided) and a standard dishwashing detergent, also gentle if possible. Simply wash your cutlery under hot water and dry it with a cloth. Nothing too complicated. So yes, it takes a little longer than putting them in the dishwasher, but that's so little compared to the prestige of setting your table with beautiful golden cutlery.
Can I wash mirror gold cutlery and matte gold flatware the same way?
In a word: no. Matte gold cutlery is very elegant and brings a unique chic style to a table setting. But their matte coating is also much more fragile. We don't recommend using a dishwasher for matte gold cutlery, even at low temperatures. Hand washing is preferable to protect the matte coating in the long run.
Conclusion
In short, hand wash or dishwasher, it's your choice and it will depend on your dishwasher, the mirror or matte polishing and your preference for the care of your tableware!
Whatever your choice, our preference is for a gentle wash, as tinted cutlery is more delicate. Hand washing will maintain their colour over time. Avoid the use of products that could damage the gold coating, such as: salt, lemon, bleach, vinegar or ultra degreasing detergents.
